December 7: Sushi Dojo NYC

So I tried Sushi Dojo which seems to be a darling of some food critics. What is a little unusual here is that the main sushi chef is not Japanese but has trained extensively and is considered to be of equal caliber as good sushi restaurants in NYC. But I didn’t have that great of an experience dining here. The sushi/sashimi was good. The overall dinner just lacked… something. Maybe some things felt a little watery, the wasabi was disappointing, but I’m going to say the service was probably what threw me off the most. The staff was friendly and nice but just lacked restaurant knowledge? My biggest gripe was. Despite having moved my reservations 30 minutes early which they seemed more than glad to do, and despite ordering the omakase which should allow the sushi chef and kitchen to time things to their liking, our dinner ended abruptly without an option. We were told that this is it because there’s no more time. Check! What? Now, I doubt that it’s like this all the time since they have really good reviews. So I’m going to guess they had an off night or something. But the thing is… I don’t think I’ll bother to return for another dinner here.
