I’d been meaning to see the Picasso exhibition ever since I arrived in Tokyo, and somehow I only made it there just before it closed. I’m so glad I did. The show was fantastic—not just because of the Picassos, but because of the way Paul Smith presented them. He created the perfect canvas for Picasso’s canvases: bold color, pattern, texture, and unexpected rooms that completely changed how you looked at each work. It was unmistakably Picasso, but at the same time, I felt like I was seeing Picasso through Paul Smith’s eyes. At moments, it even felt like you had stepped into the canvas yourself—not just looking at the painting, but somehow feeling it from inside. Whoever first thought of putting Picasso and Paul Smith together was a genius. Immersive, playful, stimulating, and such a clever way to experience art I thought I already knew.

東京に着いてすぐ行こうと思っていたピカソ展。なぜかずっと行けないまま、結局閉幕直前になってようやく行けました。でも、本当に行ってよかった。ピカソの作品そのものはもちろん素晴らしいけれど、何より面白かったのがポール・スミスによる見せ方。色、柄、質感、空間そのものを使って、ピカソのキャンバスのために最高の“キャンバス”を作っていたように感じました。ちゃんとピカソなのに、同時にポール・スミスの目や感覚を通してピカソを見ているようで、とても刺激的。ただ作品を見るというより、自分までそのキャンバスの中に入り込んで、絵を“見る”だけでなく“感じる”ような感覚。この二人を組み合わせようと最初に思いついた人、天才だと思う。知っているつもりだったピカソがまた違って見える、没入感と遊び心にあふれた展示でした。
