We went to the Oedo Antique Market at Tokyo International Forum in Yurakucho, wandering from stall to stall, when somehow we found ourselves standing in front of something unmistakably Argentine. We grew up surrounded by these folk masks—some of Mom’s collection may even predate my sister and me, and many were gifts from our Argentine grandmother, Celina Arauz de Pirovano—so they carry a lot of meaning for us. Mom was with us, and after chatting with the seller, Nakamura Shouten, she decided this little bird mask should come home and join the family. We showed him a photo of the rest of her collection, and he became just as interested in those, even saying he’d love to come see them someday. Funny how something from Argentina can find its way to you in the middle of Tokyo. Serendipity.
