This July 4th marked America’s 250th birthday, so the celebrations felt even bigger than usual. Fireworks have been part of Independence Day since 1777, and this year they certainly lived up to the tradition. What seems to be becoming our own tradition in Miami is watching them from a boat. We’ve done it three years in a row now. Usually we anchor on the Intracoastal side, where the water is calmer, but this year the sea was unusually gentle. For the first time, we were able to head out to the ocean side through Bal Harbor Inlet and watch the fireworks from just offshore. It felt like front-row seats, maybe even a little too front row, as the fireworks exploded almost directly above us. A lucky combination of calm seas and perfect timing made this one especially memorable.

今年の7月4日は、アメリカ建国250周年。だからなのか、今年の花火はいつも以上に盛大でした。独立記念日の花火は1777年から続く伝統だそうですが、今年はその歴史にふさわしいスケールでした。ここ3年ほど、7月4日はボートから花火を見るのが私たちの恒例になっています。普段は波の穏やかなイントラコースタル側に停泊して見るのですが、今年は海が驚くほど穏やかだったので、初めてバル・ハーバー・インレットを抜けて大西洋側へ。打ち上げ場所のすぐ沖から眺める花火は、まさに最前列。というより、ちょっと近すぎるくらい（笑）。こんな贅沢な眺めは、なかなかないと思います。すでに来年が楽しみ。
